I chose my costume last month, and decided on a 1950s housewife. I already had a dress, and thought this will be fun and fairly easy. I ordered shoes that are not exactly right for the costume, but will be wearable at another time.
I made a pearl necklace, because it is an absolute must-have for the housewife on the go 🙂 I also made my earrings. They used to be buttons, but I cut off the back and sanded them down, then glued backs to them. Clip-sons are painful! I had an issue while sanding, I was holding the first while sanding, and realized I was hitting my thumbnail. It didn’t dig deep, just scraped the surface. That was enough for me to realize I was doing it wrong 🙂 I got out the needle-nose pliers and used them to grip the earring while sanding. Worked perfectly! Except there are plier ridges on the front of the earring 🙁 I was smarter on the second earring, I put a cloth between the earring and the pliers and not indentations 🙂
I am making my handbag. I have it cut out of the foam, and added the sides. I also put pieces of black and white checked cloth between the front and the sides, but I forgot to seal and paint before I glued the cloth to the inside 🙁 I have an idea as to how to paint without getting it on the fabric. I have some gold tape coming to edge the top of the bag and am going to use the clasp that matches the necklace. I will put magnets inside the opening so I don’t have to deal with trying to make it actually open and close. I just don’t know what to do about the strap 🙁
My biggest issue is my hair. I have hair to my waist and it is a variety of purples and blues. I refuse to wear a wig, so that complicates things. All of the images I can find are of women with short haircuts or updos. I am not good at updos, but I am absolutely not cutting my hair for this. I had to run an errand to work yesterday, and my hair was still wet, so I put it in a clip. This usually looks messy, but it looked great, and is the style I will be using for the costume 🙂
My friends have been “helping” with ideas. Mostly they are telling me what they think is wrong with my costume. I am not going for accuracy, I am going for the feel. One friend is stuck on the hair thing and was going to come and put it up for me Tuesday morning, but the way she wanted to do it was more of a 40s feel. I’m happy I found a way myself. Another friend got stuck on the shoes and was telling me what I really needed to the point that she wasn’t listening to me while I explain or try to move on. The shoes aren’t accurate, but they are something I can work in. I can’t work in food service with kitten-heel pumps. I can work in the ones I got. Sometimes everything feels stressful. Both of these friends can be overwhelming. Thank goodness they weren’t here at the same time!!
I will be adding pictures soon 🙂
