We have lived in the same apartment for 9 1/2 years. Sometime in the last year or so there was a shake-up with the property management company, and we now have a completely different one with the same property owner. I don’t think the new management knows what they are doing. I am not comfortable with some of the new neighbors. I have gotten used to one of them, but I am still uncomfortable with him and his friends. He told Rob that he moved here to get away from the ghetto, but he brought some of it with him 🙁 He is getting a stipend to help him with his rent, and his caseworker/parole officer comes out to check on him. Now there is another unit rented to someone with the same circumstances. This one is quiet, and is at the entrance to the courtyard. He also seems to be letting some of the homeless people come and stay with him. I was shocked the first time that I saw one of the homeless people that harass me on the street and at my work was going into the apartment. Now they know where I live. I understand that not all homeless are bad, but I have had bad experiences with some of them because I work in food. Every time I have been nice and given them some food, it has come back and bit me in the ass. They try to come back every day and want more; more food, more extras. Then they get aggressive because I say no. Not acceptable. After the first couple of them did this, I told the next that it was a one-time deal, I can’t do it again. They came back and wanted more, I remind them that I said one-time deal, and they get aggressive. I just can’t deal anymore. I just say no. Period. Now they know where I live 🙁
The latest tenant (with the homeless friends) had a caseworker come out and this caseworker called the county code enforcement department. This was in December, and we didn’t find out any of this until June when the county posted a court date for the non-compliance. There were 4 primary issues and the landlord was to be fined $100 per issue per day of non-compliance after the court case. They have half-assed addressed some of them. The back wall of my building had a bubble that extended all the way across it between the 2 floors. That has been fixed. They needed to paint and do upkeep on the exterior of the buildings. That has been almost fixed, they only have to do the back wall of one apartment. They need to do lawn maintenance and clean-up. They have mowed, and picked up most of the trash, but the friends of the newest tenant keep leaving more out there. All of us are tired of picking up their crap. There is one more code violation, but I can’t think of it right now. So these things are going on, and at $200 a day, I’m sure that is getting quite expensive.
As I said at the top, we have lived here a long time and we have had the same parking space the whole time. Recently, our car and 4 others were booted. Friday night at midnight. All parked in the same places that they have been parking for years. Called the booting company, they were no help. Called the police, no help for private parking areas, although they gave us some good information about how to handle the issue. Called the landlord, no answer. Called the landlord’s emergency maintenance number, no answer. No one with the landlord’s company was available the whole weekend. We found out because the owner of one of the booted cars was a neighbor that was headed out to do Uber and make some money. I was absolutely furious, I was ready to move out that minute. As far as I’m concerned, they broke trust with all the tenants, and when they broke our trust, they broke our lease. If I move out in the middle of the lease, I will not be compensating them any extra rent.
The long and the short of it is. We are getting a new, more reliable car so Rob can start doing DoorDash to help with doubling up on payments on the car, and getting the downpayment on a new place to live.
